Abstract: We present the promises and challenges of developing a residency program at a public university in California that focuses on training and sustaining first-generation educators of color in the critical shortage fields of Special Education and Bilingual Education. Discussed are key financial incentives, innovative curriculum and clinical practices, and mentorship/community support that have contributed to the successful recruitment and retention of the program’s teacher residents. This session aims to bring together those interested in learning about and applying effective strategies for their residency programs.
Location: LBCC 101B

Our goal is retention: An examination of structural supports in a California residency program. With Yesenia Herrera, Frank
Ramos, & Briana Ronan, California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo.
In this research presentation, we present the promises and challenges of developing a residency program at a public university in California that focuses on training and sustaining first-generation educators in the critical shortage fields of Special Education and Bilingual Education. Discussed are pre-service and in-service structural supports that contribute to the retention of the program graduates. We argue for the development of a cohesive structural support system that eases the transition from pre-service teaching to in-service teaching.
