Mark Shull ran for a public seat as a Clackamas County Commissioner and won in this last election cycle. And he did this all while using his personal social media to not only promote his candidacy, but also stoke messages of real hate.
A lot of that hatred was directed towards Muslims, using consistent targets of the far-right like Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib with extreme fervor and intensity. But he did not rest there as he also leveled his bigotry towards our Black, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ communities too.
There is time for people like this to redeem and repair themselves, and the communities they affected. But it cannot come with just an apology. These things will take time, as the damage runs deep. These were not merely one-off comments from several years ago. The statements were targeted, rife with bigotry, dog whistles, and doubling down hard. Today, he announced that he has no intention to resign.
We have no confidence that Mark Shull should hold any space as an elected official.
