Welcome to the LAFD family—where service, dedication, and excellence define everything we do! 🚒🔥
The information in this LAFD Handbook serves as a comprehensive reference for all aspects of LAFD training. While this guide is here to support you, a Field Training Officer (FTO) will cover all necessary training during your initial shifts as an LAFD member.
Your FTO, Command, and High Command are here to assist you every step of the way. Never hesitate to reach out for guidance, support, or even to share your experiences—we’re all in this together! 🚒🔥
Candidates must complete a minimum of 4 different 15-minute training sessions. The duration may vary depending on the section you're working on—some sessions may last 5 minutes, while others may take up to 20 minutes. These training sessions may occur during your shift. Please be patient with your Field Training Officers (FTOs). The required training includes:
Training 1: Tour of the building, introduction to vehicles, and supplies.
Training 2: Basic training on handling standard fire calls.
Training 3: Introduction to rapid intervention techniques.
Training 4: Basic Life Support (BLS) training.
Candidates must complete a multi-question exam that includes multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions. The exam will take approximately 5-15 minutes and will be conducted on Discord. Cheating is strictly prohibited. If an FTO believes you have cheated, you will be removed from the LAFD program. The exam will consist of:
Multiple choice questions
True/false questions
Open-ended questions
A Study Guide for the exam is available on the Home Page.
Candidates must complete a supervision session with an FTO. This session involves a 30-minute shift during which the candidate acts as if they are working alone. The FTO will only intervene in life-or-death situations and will otherwise remain as an observer, offering advice when needed. We do allow 1 practice supervision session, but you must contact the FTO to arrange this. The supervision will consist of:
Candidate on-shift alone, with no active intervention from the FTO unless necessary.
FTO observing and grading the candidate's performance.
To complete your training, please fill out the 'Personnel Information Form' on the Home Page. Once completed, your availability will be sent to FTOs, who will contact you via Discord to schedule your training sessions. If your training period extends beyond 1 week, please open a ticket to notify the appropriate team.
