When Calibry Nest launches, the Welcome Screen appears. It displays a list of recently used files, a link to the Quick Guide, and the latest news and blog posts. Links to our social media pages are also available in the bottom-right corner. To close the Welcome Screen, simply click anywhere outside of it or press Escape.
The main window of Calibry Nest consists of the following sections:
1) Main Toolbar is the primary panel of tools used for processing scans;
2) Side Toolbar shows a combination of tools varying depending on the stage of processing and the type of data opened;
3) Files Panel (also called Projects Panel) shows the scans and all results generated during post-processing;
4) Editing area displays the data of a currently selected project. This is where scan data can be edited;
5) Scanner panel shows the list of all scans stored on the current computer;
6) Scanner Control Panel allows to switch between different scanner modes;
7) Status/Log Panel shows current progress, status data and action history;
8) Scanner Connection Indicator displays the current connection status of the scanner;
9) Memory Monitor opens a small window displaying RAM and VRAM usage.
Main Toolbar and Side Toolbar, their buttons and functions are described in more detail in Chapter 10: Tools and Toolbars.
The panel on the left side of the Calibry Nest main window is called the Files Panel. It is also often referred to as the Project Panel. It shows all the files and results being currently used. Starting with Calibry Nest 3.7.42 thumbnails are also shown in this list for easier navigation.
If it is a scan, the File panel shows a type of scanner used to make it, how many frames it contains and, if there are some results, they are shown below the Frames list.
Orange circles indicate polygonal results. If the circle turns brown, it means that this result is no longer valid and cannot be used for alignment. It happens if the scan undergoes another registration, which changes the point cloud.
A green circle means that the result includes texture.
A gold frame around the scan label means that this scan is marked using Priority Mode.
A pink square on a frame means that it includes a texture frame.
If it is a combination of two or more scans, it is shown here with a green result label and the result name includes the names of all the scans used to make it.
If it is a model, it is shown with a file-type label.
Red frame around the scan label means that this scan is either corrupted or not loaded completely.
For more on these labels and designations, see Chapter 8: Postprocessing a Scan.
The panel on the right side of the Calibry Nest main window is the Scanner Panel. It displays a list of all scans created on the current computer (or transferred there afterward). It also contains the Scanner Toolbar, which can be used as an alternative to the touchscreen of a scanner.
All scans are grouped into folders [1]. By default, each folder is named using the scan date in the format SCAN_yyyymmdd, and a new folder is created each day. Folder names can be easily changed either before or after scanning.
Individual scans are represented by an image of their first frame, along with a label indicating the tracking mode used [2]. By default, scan names consist of the date (yyyymmdd), time (hhmmss), and the type of scanner used, but these can be renamed at any time if needed. The second row of the label shows the scan size and its timestamp, even if the file has been renamed.
Double-click any scan to open and process it in Calibry Nest. You can also double-click other scans you want to open without waiting for the previous scans to be fully loaded. Scans will be added to the queue and will be loaded sequentially.
Starting from Nest 3.5.24, the Scanner Toolbar [3] is placed vertically on the right side of the Scanner Panel, but it can be easily detached and moved to a different location if needed. The Scanner Panel itself can also be detached and placed on the other side of the main window.
The Scanner Toolbar buttons and functions are described in Chapter 5: Scanner interface.
The name of a given folder can be easily changed by hovering a mouse over the right end of a name bar and pressing the pencil icon. After renaming is complete, press Enter to apply changes.
Clicking the name of any folder quickly selects all scans within it. This can be useful if you want to open or delete all scans stored in that folder. The corresponding buttons are located at the bottom of the panel.
You can also select multiple scans by holding Ctrl or Shift and right-clicking the desired scans.
When deleting scans, keep in mind that files are sent to the Recycle Bin by default. To permanently delete a scan, hold Shift while clicking the trash bin icon — it will turn red to indicate permanent deletion.
The same logic applies to both individual scans and groups of selected scans.
If you click any individual scan on the Scanner Panel, the extended info panel will be displayed, showing additional info about the scan.
In addition to the tracking mode used, the number in the lower-left corner of the preview shows the total number of frames in the selected scan (1021 in this case).
This extended info panel also contains several pictograms, representing the setting used to make this scan. Their meaning is covered in Chapter 5: Scanner Interface.
Here, you can rename, delete, or open the selected scan. You can also click the Open in folder button to open the folder containing the scan—useful when you need to copy files to an external drive or share them online.
Note that these are raw (unprocessed) scans. They are original files created by the scanner and do not contain any edits made in Calibry Nest—unless they are manually overwritten with edited versions (which is generally not recommended unless the user fully understands the implications).
These files can be used to start over if something goes wrong during post-processing. They are also the files typically requested by Thor3D Technical Support if you encounter any issues and need assistance.
Please keep these files intact until you are completely sure that the project is finished and you no longer need them.
You can also access the folder containing all the scans by double-clicking the Calibry tray icon in the notification area.
When Calibry Nest is running, the Calibry Tray Icon is visible in the system tray (near the system clock).
Its color indicates the current scanner status, duplicating the status indicator shown in the lower-left corner of the main window. This can serve as a helpful visual cue when the Nest window is minimized. (See Chapter 4: Scanner connection for more details.)
You can always access unprocessed (raw) scans stored locally on a given computer by double-clicking this icon. Any folders or files renamed or copied into the Calibry Scans folder will be reflected in the Scanner Panel.
The Calibry Tray Icon features a context menu with several additional options:
— Start/Stop Scanner: You can start or stop the scanner directly from this menu.
— Show Scanner Screen: Displays the scanner’s screen on your computer, which is useful during demos, trainings, or presentations. The scanner can also be fully controlled from this screen—especially handy when it's mounted on a tripod and operated from a distance.
— Settings submenu contains startup preferences:
Start by connect — automatically starts the scanner when it’s plugged in and powered on.
Start by button — lets the user start the scanner using the hardware “PLAY” button after the device has been switched off.
Startup with system — adds the Calibry Tray Icon to Windows startup, making it available immediately after reboot.
— Change Scans Folder: Allows the user to choose a different folder for storing new scans. (Note: existing scans will remain in their original location and are not moved automatically.)
— About: Displays the version of the currently installed 3D Scanning Software module (scanner-shell.exe). This version may differ from the version of Calibry Nest installed.
To change the interface language in Calibry Nest, go to View > Language and select your preferred language from the dropdown menu.
The Window menu allows you to temporarily show or hide specific panels and processing toolbars.
You can also access this functionality by right-clicking the Main Toolbar.
All panels and process bars in Nest can be detached, repositioned, and docked to different areas of the window.
To restore the default layout, select Window > Default.
Nest Settings can be accessed by clicking on the gear icon on the main toolbar. It contains two tabs, shown below side-by-side:
The Processing tab contains settings related to scan post-processing. These settings are described in detail in Chapter 8: Post-processing a Scan.
The General tab includes interface settings such as:
— Theme and color options, which let users customize the appearance of 3D data and choose between Light and Dark interface themes.
— Sound settings, where you can assign sounds for successful task completion or error notifications.
— Keyboard shortcuts, which can be customized for nearly every function and process in Calibry Nest.
— 3D mouse and gamepad sensitivity, which can be adjusted to your preference.
— File associations, allowing you to enable or disable automatic association of Nest with supported 3D file formats.
The Help menu provides access to several useful options:
— Welcome Screen, which can be reopened at any time;
— User Manual, available for quick reference;
— Calibration Update, allowing you to add a new calibration;
— Check for Updates, to see if a newer version of Calibry Nest is available;
— Send Feedback, which helps generate a system dump with technical data to share with our support team (support@calibry3d.com);
— About Nest, which opens a pop-up window with details about the currently installed version of Calibry Nest.
In addition to the Help menu, there are two extra interface elements designed to provide quick assistance: Quick Help and Quick Guide.
Quick Help is accessible via the question mark icon in the upper-left corner of the main window. This button can be shown or hidden via the context menu.
When pressed, it opens an overlay displaying the mouse and keyboard controls available in the current editing mode. This list of shortcuts automatically updates based on the active tool.
To close the Quick Help overlay, simply click on it and it will minimize back into the question mark button until clicked again.
Quick Guide is an overlay that shows descriptions of the post-processing settings. Go to Settings and click the question mark button in the upper-right corner of the Settings window to activate the Quick Guide overlay. Use the arrow buttons to move through the settings and descriptions. Use the overlay's X button to close the Quick Guide.
Apart from conventional dragging and zooming tools, it is also possible to double-click on the sides of the Editing Area to move the model. This is especially convenient when using a touchpad on a laptop or a touchscreen on a tablet. A double left-click in the middle of the Editing Area zooms the model in. A double right-click zooms the model out.
At the bottom of the Calibry Nest window, there is a bar that combines Status Bar, Progress Bar, and Logs Panel. This bar shows information about recently loaded data (scans or models) and current task progress (opening/saving files, post-processing operations, etc.):
Clicking or pulling the bar up opens a Log Panel that shows the history of actions, timestamps, processing parameters, and time passed since each operation:
To see how much RAM or Video Memory (VRAM) is being used during post-processing, select the Memory tab in the bottom-right corner.
This window is also detachable and can be docked to any convenient location or left floating.
