We are a mountain bike program open to all middle and high school students in Caldwell County, NC and a part of the North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League and the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. Our focus is on positive youth development through mountain biking. The Caldwell Black Bears began in 2016 to participate in the first season of the NCICL. Our program now includes the Hibriten High School team for high school age students who live in the HHS district and the William Lenoir Middle School team for students who live in the WLMS district. The Caldwell Black Bears team is for all other middle and high school students in Caldwell County not eligible for the two school based teams.
Shawn knew from the moment he learned about NICA that he wanted to start a team in Caldwell County. He saw Singletrack High, signed up on the interest form at the NICA webpage, and then waited. In 2015, the NC League was announced at Interbike, and in 2016 Shawn and Golden attended the first NC Leadership Summit in Greensboro. They registered one of the first teams in the state, the Caldwell Black Bears, and have worked to build youth mountain biking in our area ever since.
As a teacher, Golden always wanted to share her love of mountain biking with her students. Finally, as part of the North Carolina league, she gets to fulfill that dream. The coaching role is a new one after years of being a competitor, but the rewards are great! Watching her middle schoolers develop in confidence on the bike and become part of the NICA community is extremely satisfying.
