This voluntary scheme aims to assist anyone who needs taking to essential destinations within a reasonable distance and who has no other means of transport.
This is primarily for medical appointments but we may be able to consider other essential occasional journeys on merit if we have drivers available.
It is not a cheap taxi service for general use.
HOW DO I ARRANGE A TRIP?
Once you have an appointment (with the GP surgery, hospital or dentist, for example) you should ring one of the Scheme coordinators to request transport.
Please call:
between 8:30am and 5:30pm
on a week-day
giving us at least 48 hours’ notice if at all possible. This is to allow time to find a driver for you.
Same-day emergency appointments will be considered but we cannot guarantee to find a driver.
WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW
Your name (& address if you haven’t used us before)
Where you need to go
What date and time you need to get there
Any special needs e.g. if you will be bringing a walking aid, or will need a wheelchair to get to your clinic
If there will be small children in the car.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The coordinator will find a volunteer driver
The coordinator will call you and tell you
the driver’s name
the time at which he/she will pick you up.
the cost of the trip
If we have an email address for you, you will receive confirmation by email with all these details.
HOW CAN I HELP THE DRIVER
Be ready when the driver comes.
Let the Coordinator know if you will be bringing a spouse or friend along.
If a child is coming in the car with you, you’re responsible for providing the car-seat and fixing it in the car.
If the person attending the appointment is a child or a vulnerable adult, he/she will need to be accompanied by another adult.
Don’t ask the driver to do extra things which haven’t been arranged in advance with the coordinator.
The driver is responsible for deciding the route that is taken. The driver’s word is final.
PAYMENT
Drivers are reimbursed to cover their fuel and other allowable expenses. They do not make a profit.
Passengers are asked to pay 40p per mile, to the driver in cash. Passengers’ payments are added to by the County Council.
Volunteers, passengers and surgeries are spread across several villages, so what seems to be the same journey may vary in cost from one time to another.
The coordinators do their best to keep down the costs to passengers by looking for a driving in the same village.
ABOUT THE CAR SCHEME
The Car Scheme is maintained by local people who have volunteered to drive or carry out administrative duties.
The drivers are all DBS checked and use their own cars to take people to appointments.
