I hope you will focus less on your grades and points, and more on your learning and improvement overall. Nevertheless, it is a college course and part of my job is assigning grades (though I like to think of it as you providing evidence of a grade). I am slowly moving towards ungrading as a practice, so this is another step on that journey.
You can find the things you will be graded on below. All components can be revised and resubmitted until full points or overall deadline for that material (two weeks after we finish the content). Quizzes will need to be retaken in class by Friday before the listed deadline. Overall deadlines are as follows:
Limits (Weeks 1 - 3): September 17th
Derivatives (Weeks 4 - 6): October 8th
Applications of Derivatives (Weeks 7 - 10): November 5th
Integration (Weeks 11 - 13): December 3rd
Applications of Integration (Weeks 14 - 16): December 17th
The initial attempts will be due on Thursdays before our class meetings and will be scored as follows:
90% or higher = 2 points
[70%, 90%) = 1 point
Less than 70% or no submission = 0 points.
If you score less than 90% on the initial attempt, you can complete a Recheck up to 100% to get your 2 points! Rechecks are available on DeltaMath and due the following Sunday. In the Recheck, you work through three similar problems for each problem missed, but with supports available.
Class work will only be used as a grade modifier. This means that if you're close to a grade level at the end of the semester, I can use your work from class to determine whether or not to 'round' your grade up. You may also include classwork in your portfolio reflection to show your progress and understanding.
There will be a quiz with 2 problems each class for me to see your written work and thought process on the last day of class in a week. These problems will be graded as either 2 points for substantial and complete understanding and communication, 1 point for developing understanding and communication (i.e. you had an error or had unclear work, but there was some understanding shown), and 0 points for minimal understanding or communication.
You will have the opportunity to retake any quizzes you would like in the last 20 minutes of Friday classes. There may be a requirement to retake a quiz to explain how you prepared for the retake.
We will have two in-person exams, one on differentiation techniques tentatively scheduled for Friday, March 15th and another on integration techniques tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 10th.
If you wish to, you can retake one of these exams during our final exam time on Friday, May 24th.
We will have portfolio assignments due for our other units (limits & continuity, applications of derivatives, and applications of integrals). These will involve a demonstration of your understanding, such as contributing to a class repository of video solutions, as well as a reflection.
If your portfolio assignment does not meet specifications, you will be asked to revise and resubmit.
Our cumulative final exam will be taken in class during our last class meeting on May 24th.
You may be dropped from the course after missing 1 week worth of class. Please reach out as soon as possible if you will be missing class so that I know that you're still engaged with the class.
A bunch of high stakes exams in a class seems unreasonable to me. All of the points in this class are from ‘formative assessments’ - they are intended to help you understand what you do and don’t know about the material and to grow from your mistakes. However, they all become 'summative assessments' - showing what you know at the end, when you show your mastery of the material. As such, everything can be resubmitted until you have a perfect score.
You do have a limited time to get in those resubmissions, so be sure to submit early and often.
If you're new to Mesa, there are no +/- grades.
Your final grade in the class will be based on your overall points:
I do hope you use each other to learn the material, but I ask that all items worth points are your own thinking and work. For all assignments, you may be called into office hours to explain your work or discuss. Since you can revise and resubmit, I hope that you will feel comfortable submitting something that isn't there yet for feedback!
Evidence of cheating - getting help from a PERSON or online tutor for one of those components will result in a 0 for that week's worth of contributions until we have met and discussed how you will demonstrate your understanding of the concepts tested.
For further clarification and information on these issues, please consult with your instructor or see Procedure 3100.2, Student Disciplinary Procedures.
