STEM SOS is a project- and inquiry-based learning (PBL & IBL) method to education that aims to enhance students' learning in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. This will promote achievement in standards both locally and nationally by encouraging students to work together and take responsibility for their learning.

PBLs emphasize customized learning as a beneficial teaching strategy and involve students in a substantive investigation of a topic of interest to them. PBLs have shown to be helpful in helping students build the deeper learning skills they will need throughout their life. Student projects are shared as useful resources for students and educators in the STEM SOS PBL Showcase.

PBL projects are divided into three tiers. Short-term projects that are more closely tied to the curriculum make up Level I. Projects at levels II and III are lengthy endeavors.
