Friday, May 9, 2025 at Mount Saint Vincent University
This one-day workshop is an opportunity for high school and university calculus instructors from across Atlantic Canada to come together and engage in discussions regarding curriculum covered in high school and university. This year, our focus will be on mathematics education in the age of artificial intelligence.
We will have a plenary speaker, panel & small group discussions and activities. There will also be 5 minute talks should anyone have something they wish to share. Lunch will be provided on-site. The schedule can be found here.
Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Christopher Duffy
Senior Academic Fellow, Centre for Studies in Higher Education School of Mathematics & Statistics
The University of Melbourne, Australia
Title: Generative AI is (not) going to ruin mathematics education
Abstract: Generative AI is the latest in a long line of technological innovations that has forced mathematics educators to rethink not only how they assess student progress, but the purpose and value of the things we choose to teach. For students this technology brings new opportunities for broad access to truly personalised and near instant feedback on their progress. In this talk we discuss the risks and opportunities for educators, students and high schools and universities in a world with easy access to this technology.
AI Panel:
Dr. Emily Ballantyne, Director of Teaching & Learning, Mount Saint Vincent University
Dr. Sarah Chisholm, University Teaching Fellow, Learning Centre Coordinator, Dalhousie University
Erick Lee, Registrar & Math Teacher at Citadel High School
Josh Robar, Mathematics student, Mount Saint Vincent University
