Calaveras High School's garden has been blossoming into a full grown farm the past 3 years. Kevin Hesser, the agriculture teacher, leads classes in crop production and guides the Future Farmers of America in learning how to grow food, care for animals, manage a farm, teach outdoor education, and become environmental stewards. This year, Kate Doherty, a farming and nutrition advisor with FoodCorps California, is working alongside Kevin to create a sustainable community of health for years to come.
We have some exciting plans for this year! Fresh Fridays is a lunch program that will bring seasonal, organic, and local foods to the cafeteria so that students can have more access to healthy food choices. We are also building a new, fully-stocked outdoor kitchen where students can learn about nutrition and culinary skills and experiment with preparing dishes using produce straight from our farm. Our beautiful farm is expanding to produce enough food for these programs, and students are stepping up into leadership roles to help run this blossoming production farm. We are building sheds, garden beds, and even a brand new greenhouse this spring.
We need your help to keep this program alive!
