Research Interests and Our Expertise:

Overview & Background:

Organoids and stem cell-based disease modeling and regenerative medicine are our ongoing research topics. The unifying theme of our research program are seeking to understand the underlying mechanisms of various disease so that develop strategies for the treatment of target diseases using animal models, veterinary patients (in the translational medicine area), and cellular models.

We use a multidisciplinary approach integrating biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, immunology, animal models to find treatments of various target diseases.

We also have a powerful high-throughput efficacy test/toxicity test tool by using Stem cells / Organoids.

Also, our researches are running on wheels with Jeju National University Hospital, Jeju National University Veterianry Hospotal, Seoul National University Hospital, and Chungnam National university hospital, and granted by National Research Foundation of Korea and Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (2022)

[연구의 흐름]

석사과정 및 박사과정: 충북대학교 수의과대학에서 Calcium을 기반으로 한 질병모델 개발 및 각 질병에서의 칼슘 관련 단백질의 역할 규명

Postdoc: Cornell University에서 Host-microbe interaction 연구. Salmonella typhi, 즉 장티푸스균은 인간을 host로 하기 때문에, 설치류로 진행한 연구에서는 오랜 기간 진행해야 하는 잠복감염(persistent infection)을 연구하기 어려웠기에, 이를 organoid (장, 쓸개)를 구축하여 장티푸스균의 잠복감염 연구를 수행하였음.

PI: 제주대학교에서 오가노이드를 이용한 질병모델 제작, 오가노이드를 이용한 재생의학 연구를 계획 중.

• 제주대학교 의과대학과 human sample을 가지고 CADASIL이라는 뇌혈관질환의 기전연구 중.

• 제주대학교 수의과대학 동물병원과 연계하여 Tumor organoid를 이용한 암 연구 계획 중.

• 분당서울대병원/충남대학교 의과대학/제주대학교 동물병원과 장 오가노이드를 이용한 IBD (Crohn's disease & Ulcerative colitis) 재생치료 연구 중.

• 제주감귤연구소와 면역기전 개선 연구 계획 중 (2023년 경 시작 예정)
