Dear Judges,
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I am a 17-year-old student at Nemaha Central High School. This past year has been the busiest yet enjoyable time of my life even with issues like covid, and I feel like I have matured in leaps and bounds. The experiences I have gone through have shown me that I am ready and excited to move on with the next step of my life.
Even with covid, I still tried to make the most and the best out of the situation we were given. With the limited amount of people allowed at games and no school dance getting through my fall semester was a little rough, but I tried my hardest to make the most of it. One of my favorite memories this year was working our senior class breakfast even though we couldn’t actually serve anyone inside. We still all had a fun time enjoying our time with our class while still serving our customers. We all sat inside serving and making jokes at the same time. This year was my second year being in FCCLA. This fall, I will be attending Bellus Academy to become a licensed cosmetologist.
I love art, so I thought I would like to challenge myself to a mural. I decided I would redo the one in the band room. I started out by sketching out the design and priming the wall. After priming the wall, I measured out the design to see how big the squares would have to be and started taping off the squares and started painting them, this process took much longer than expected. After finishing the squares, I started sketching on the design of the instruments on to the squares with the help of my mentor Sarah Feldkamp. Once I was done sketching the design onto the squares, I started painting them. I mixed special glitter into the paint to give the instruments a nice shine and sparkle to them. After I started sketching out the center design and painting it and doing touch ups I was finished. Although it took longer than expected the biggest lesson I learned was to not procrastinate, and it's always better to get stuff done early than last minute.
I have always had a love for art since I was a little kid so i figured redoing the mural in the band room was the perfect senior project for me. It would cause me to challenge myself by giving me a large scale project but would also allow me to not hate doing it because of the challenge since I love art.
If I were to give underclassmen advice about working their senior project next year, it would be to not procrastinate or forget about your senior project and to get it done during the fall semester especially since by spring semester everyone just wants to relax and finish school and not be stressed out about their senior project. I believe that if I would have started earlier, I would have been less stressed out about it
I want to thank you for willingly donating your time to give not only me, but also my fellow students a chance to share our discoveries and experience with you. I appreciate the time you have taken to read through my portfolio and to listen to my presentation. I hope that it was informative for you as well as reflective of my feelings.
Sincerely,
Caitlyn Schmitz
