RENT Poster

My poster submission for the Middlesex Theatre Department's Spring 2023 production - RENT. The musical focuses on a group of young creatives navigating love, disease and scraping by in 1980's New York City. My poster received first runner's up for the theatre department's design contest. 

As I was unfamiliar with the source material, I watched through a few versions of the show to get a better sense of how I wanted it to feel. Overall the show felt gritty but colorful to me. What stood with me after was not really any particular character(s), but the sense of place and situation that was presented. 

My vision with this poster was to feel like it was part of the walls of their East Village neighborhood. I went for a photorealistic look with weathered flyers and graffiti. Photorealistic design has been a style I have been experimenting with this semester and this project especially was a big learning curve in incorporating texture.
