My Projects

Concept Analytics

As a member of the Concept Analytics Lab at the University of Sussex, I have worked on a huge variety of projects using both corpus and discourse techniques for real-world applications and interdisciplinary collaborations. You can find out more about our work here.

Localising Satoori

I am investigating how satoori (lit. dialect, a collective term for nonstandard varieties of Korean) is interpreted by fans dispersed globally who have little or no understanding of the attitudes toward those varieties in South Korea. How are these varieties being changed by the proliferation of K-Pop around the world?

Hallyu and Masculinity

Along with Yanni Sun, I am working on a corpus linguistics project investigating discursive presentations of the links between masculinity and Korean popular culture (Hallyu) on Reddit and its Chinese equivalent. We will present our work at CDADD 2024 in Poznan, Poland.

Softblocking

I have explored the online phenomenon of softblocking, and its metadiscursive construction on Twitter/X. This reflects our changing notions of privacy and politeness on social media. I explored tweets mentioning this practice, an innovative use of existing affordances, to understand why this practice is seen as necessary, and in which situations it is constructed as polite or proper to engage in softblocking.

Real Talk East London

Along with Dr Johanna Gerwin, I am leading Real Talk, a project to celebrate the language of East London through merchandise, in partnership with the Mile End Community Project
