Artist Statement: 

Aaliyah Hill (b. 2005) is a Saint Joseph MI based artist currently residing in Milwaukee WI. Aaliyah is furthering their education at The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design majoring in New Studio Practice/Fine Arts and minoring in Arts Management, projected to graduate in 2027. As an artist, they handle topics of childhood, sexuality, and the importance of early art education throughout their works and studies. 

Project Statement: 

In recent years, I’ve come to realize that I’ve never truly created a self-portrait. A simple rendering of my face feels insufficient—it fails to capture my thoughts, passions, desires, and love that are essential when representing self. Yet, I believe self-portraits serve as powerful forms of documentation, preserving different moments in life. With this work, I explore contemporary approaches to portraiture, drawing inspiration from my current influences, as they offer a more authentic way to define myself.
