Lab Director
Dr. Caceda received his MD at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and his PhD at Emory University. At the start of his research career in medical school, he studied brain energetics in chronic hypoxia. Later in graduate school, he focused on the effects of neuropeptide modulation in schizophrenia rodent models. During residency, he trained in brain imaging, in particular in the use of paradigms exploring decision making modulation. This led him to his suicide research. He joined Stony Brook University Medical Center the summer of 2017 as an Associate Professor in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Department. He has held clinical roles as in the Psychiatry Inpatient Division and the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). He also has a clinical and research appointment at the Northport VA Medical Center. His research is focused on understanding the neurobiology of suicide behavioral using a variety of approaches, MRI, PET, TMS, in order to identify targets for therapeutic interventions.
Post-Doctoral Associate
Dr. Diane Kim graduated from Stony Brook University in 2014 with a PhD in Integrative Neuroscience in Psychology. She has a keen interest in learning about the research methods to integrate forward and back translation in order to explicate the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of stress effects on psychiatric disorders. Her graduate research training involved studying the effects of memory and coping behavior through an ethologically-relevant rodent model of chronic psychological stress. Behavioral measures of memory, coping, and defensive behaviors were measured and sites of plasticity associated with the behavioral changes were measured through brain region metabolism, specifically cytochrome oxidase histology. Upon graduation, Dr. Kim worked as a grant writer with the Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University, School of Medicine. More recently, she led the grant submission for the Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease (CEAD) which was awarded from the NY Department of Health. In addition, she has worked as a Clinical Research Associate for Dr. Anissa Abi-Dargham’s lab, providing administrative and grant management support. Currently, Dr. Kim is continuing her research career training as a Post-doctoral Associate in Dr. Ricardo Caceda’s lab studying the neurobiological and physiological mechanisms underlying suicidal behavior.
Dr. Chacko received his MD at St. Matthews University School of Medicine in the Cayman Islands. Dr. Chacko is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor and serves as an attending physician for Psychiatry's Consultation Liaison Division.
Julianne received her BA in psychology from Stony Brook University in 2020. She joined the team as the lab coordinator in the summer of 2020. Her research training thus far has been on investigating developmental disorders, specifically ASD and ADHD, using various clinical assessments, and EEG proctoring. She also, has past research experience with a turtle model, researching spatial memory and adult neurogenesis. As a coordinator, she provides research management support while continuing her research development as a prospective candidate for PA school. Her research interests focus primarily on understanding the relationship between mood disorders and cognitive impairments, and learning about the gender differences in MDD and suicidality.
