Roles at Camp Kahani
Camp Kahani is a 1-week virtual summer camp for girls to explore and express themselves through storytelling. At Camp Kahani, our campers will discover how to write themselves into spaces where they aren’t represented, build a community around shared experiences, and take agency over their lives by writing the future (see attached PDF for more details). Camp Kahani is a summer camp for both our participants and staff. As a staff member, you will be mentored by the leadership team, develop strong bonds with a like-minded peer group, and gain access to a network of strong, supportive, and influential people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Camp Counselor (5)
We are looking for:
Young womxn who are Junior/Seniors in High School OR Freshman/Sophomores in College
Interested in art, writing, storytelling, representation, or education
Enjoy working with children
Time Commitment:
Before the Camp (July 6 - Aug 1) - weekly meetings, 1.5 hours/week
Training (August 1 - 2) - 5 hours/day of training
During the camp (August 3 - 7) - 5 hours everyday of facilitation
You will:
Lead a group of 4 girls (ages 9-12) through self-exploration and self-expression activities
Be a part of an inclusive community
Receive supportive mentorship from the camp leadership
Develop lifelong bonds, while supporting the next generation of storytellers to create representation for minority girls
Role Description
We are looking for motivated, energetic, and committed young women, who believe in the power of storytelling to serve as camp counselors. Counselors should be juniors/seniors in high school, or freshmen/sophomores in college. This role entails engaging with South Asian girls (ages 9-12) around storytelling, family history, and writing. As a counselor, you will have the opportunity to grow and nurture the next generation of storytellers, build an inclusive community, develop your skills in communication and leadership, and leave a lasting impact on young girls through your work. Camp Kahani is a summer camp for both our participants and staff. You will receive positive, supportive, one-on-one mentorship from the Camp Kahani leadership team. We are committed to ensuring all our staff experience Camp Kahani as a summer camp for them too - where staff build meaningful friendships, get the support they need to succeed both within and beyond the camp, create an experience they are excited about, and have fun along the way.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for carrying out the lesson plans provided to you every day, and creating a space where all participants feel engaged and included. The camp will be held in the first week of August (August 3 - 7), during which each counselor will help facilitate for 3 hours per day (9AM - 12PM Pacific Time). Counselors must also be available to attend one hour of prep and one hour of debriefing each day. The weekend before the camp (August 1 - 2), counselors must also be able to commit to full-day trainings to meet the Camp Kahani team, develop relationships with the other staff, learn about the curriculum, and learn about best practices for mentoring the participants.
Communications Director (1)
We are looking for:
Freshman/Sophomore in College
Interested in community building, art, writing, storytelling, representation, or education
Time Commitment:
Before the camp (July 6 - August 3) - 4 hours/week
During the camp (August 3 - 7) - 2 hours/day
You Will:
Be the primary point of communication between families, girls, and the camp
Be a part of creating an inclusive community
Receive supportive mentorship from the camp leadership
Develop lifelong bonds, while supporting the next generation of storytellers to create representation for minority girls
Role Description

As Communications Director, you will be responsible for managing camp communications (email, phone, social media) with parents and community partners. You will have the opportunity to hone your communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and create meaningful personal interactions with a range of people. Your work will directly impact young girls and their families, and help them feel connected to their communities. You will receive positive, supportive, one-on-one mentorship from the Camp Kahani leadership team. Technology Director (1)
We are looking for:
Junior/Senior in High School OR Freshman/Sophomore in College
Interested in technology and education
Interested in community building, art, writing, storytelling, representation, or education
Time Commitment:
Before the camp (July 6 - July 31) - Weekly planning meetings, 1.5 hours/week
Training (Aug 1 - 2) - 5 hours/day training
During the camp (August 3 - 7) - 1 hour everyday of supporting technology use, 2 hours “on call” in case of significant issues
You will:
Help select the technology we use during the camp
Help train staff in how to use the technology for the camp
Support participants and staff during the camp with technology use
Be a part of creating an inclusive community
Receive supportive mentorship from the camp leadership
Develop lifelong bonds, while supporting the next generation of storytellers to create representation for minority girls

We are looking for a motivated, energetic, and committed person to serve as a Technology Director. As Technology Director, you will help select the technology we use during the camp. Your primary role will involve supporting participants and staff during the camp, to ensure that they are able to use the technology as effectively as possible. You will work closely with our Pedagogy & Research Team to define best practices around virtual teaching. You will have the opportunity to explore how we can use technology to enhance community educational experiences, and facilitation connections around storytelling. Your work will directly impact young girls, their families, and the entire team, by helping us build community through virtual educational experiences during this pandemic. You will receive positive, supportive, one-on-one mentorship from the Camp Kahani leadership team. We are committed to ensuring all our staff experience Camp Kahani as a summer camp for them too - where staff build meaningful friendships, get the support they need to succeed both within and beyond the camp, and have fun along the way.
Materials Staff (2)
We are looking for:
Junior/Senior in High School
For this role only, staff must be based in the Bay Area
Time Commitment:
Before the camp (July 5 - July 25) - 4 hours/week
Interested in community building, art, writing, storytelling, representation, or education
You will:
Help select the physical materials we will send to campers to support their virtual learning experience
Create the camp kits and mail them to the students
Be a part of creating an inclusive community
Receive supportive mentorship from the camp leadership
Develop lifelong bonds, while supporting the next generation of storytellers to create representation for minority girls
Role Description
As a Materials Director, you will help select and collate the physical materials we send to the campers to help them create art and stories. You will be responsible for defining what needs to be mailed to campers in advance of the camp, collecting the necessary materials, assembling the camp kits, and mailing them to the students. You will have the opportunity to explore how we can use physical materials to aid in virtual education and community-building. Your work will directly impact young girls, their families, and the entire team, by helping us blend physical activities with virtual educational experiences during this pandemic. You will receive positive, supportive, one-on-one mentorship from the Camp Kahani leadership team.
