Off to Dzongu, Sikkim
This day, we will proceed to Dzongu in Sikkim - a hamlet which completely isolates you from the world.
At Dzongu, experience life at its most natural. It wouldn’t be exaggerating if we called Dzongu as Sikkim’s best-kept secret.
Untrammelled by tourists, who skip it for the popular places like Lachen-Lachung, Dzongu is not your typical hill resort where you hire an overpriced taxi, visit the mandatory spots in a rush, eat pastries and act touristy while sharing countless on-the-go Instagram stories. It’s an undisturbed land where you’d appreciate nature at its purest and nurture lifetime bonds with the simple, warm and hospitable Lepchas—the original inhabitants of Sikkim.
We will be staying at a charming little wooden homestays of the Lephas, who believe that a life spent being true to nature would bless them with a rewarding afterlife.
This is a place for those who truly love nature. Its inhabitants depend entirely on nature for their livelihood.
Leading a self-sustained life, they grow their vegetables and crops with organic manure, in their backyard. As we being their guests, we will be served the purest food we have ever tasted.
You will surely fall in love with Dzongu - the genuinely pristine nature, the people, the food, altogether it feels like you are in a different country.
Anyone visiting the Dzongu Reserve must get an inland permit before entering. Like a visa to enter a restricted place within our country. But don't worry, we have taken care of the permits.
We will reach Dzongu for lunch, and after Lunch, we will be going for a short hike, to the banks of the Teesta river.
Stay: Homestay at Dzongu | Meals: B, D | Travel time: 3 hours
Leisure Trek at Dzongu
There's enough that can be done at Dzongu. We will begin the day with a nature walk, visit the local school, converse with the kids, cross some of the scariest bridges you have ever set foot on, visit a Monastery and few chortens, feel the lazy vibe of the village and the silence, before we head back to the homestay for Lunch.
When you are back in the homestay, you must try some of the exotic food, which are really unique to this part of the country, unavailable elsewhere.
Try the chaang, a local beer made from fermented millet and different varieties of local fruit and herb wines – mulberry, rasberry, plum etc
Your time at Dzongu will be filled with warm affection by the Lepchas. They are proud but shy, steely but gentle, hard working but relaxed. When you depart, its going to be best check-out experience, something so genuine that you will never get even in a highest possible star hotel.
After lunch, we will begin our journey back to the capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok.
The journey back to Gangtok is so picturesque. We will cross numerous rivers, bridges and reservoirs, each one make us stop for a picture.
On reaching Gangtok, time for shopping at the MG road, try some of the best cusines around Sikkim, and enjoy the night life of this region.
