There are many aspects of the grant writing process that we will not cover in depth during the one hour workshop. This page contains a hodgepodge of other tips for your consideration. See the resources page to find books and websites to fill in the gaps.

Work Samples

• This should include your best work.
• This work should also give an indication of the project you plan to execute. Make sure the two are connected!

Inquiry Letter

You may also send a letter of inquiry to a potential funder to introduce yourself and outline your goals. It should include the following:

• who you are as well as other involved parties
• what you want to do: a summary of your project
• what you have been doing—recent projects, publications, etc.
• the amount you would like to receive
• contact information so the potential funder can be in touch with you

Budgets

If you need to submit a budget, start with a spreadsheet and make note of the following categories:

Artist Fee

• How much will you pay yourself?

Assistance Fees

• How much will you pay others?
• Do you need to hire a consultant?

Documentation

Materials

• What do you need to complete the project?

Equipment Rental/Investment

Travel

Other

• Administrative fees such as postage, marketing fees, etc.

Contingencies

Rejection

Don't let rejection keep you from applying again or for different grants.

• Ask for feedback from funders if appropriate.
• When some time has passed, review your application. Brainstorm how it can be improved to apply during the next round.
• Seek more appropriate grants. Spend more time researching for grants that match the work you are making.
