许玥 Yue Xu PhD

  • Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford

  • PhD in disability studies at UIC; Master’s in Clinical Social work from the University of Chicago. Illinois Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LEND) fellow and incomingfaculty mentor

My research centers on immigrant families of children with autism and other developmental disorders. Using community-based participatory methods, I culturally adapted, and pilotedParents Taking Action (developed originally for Latinx families by Sandy Magaña) for low-incomeChinese immigrant families in Chicago and New York. I have also worked closely with Chicago’s diverse parent support groups such as Grupo Salto (serving primarily Spanish-speaking families), Chicagoland Autism Connection (serving primarily Black families), and Latinas United in Love for Autism, and the Pui Tak Center support group (serving primarily Chinese immigrant families). I am passionate about developing culturally appropriate parent-implemented naturalistic behavioral and developmental interventions and implementing evidence-based interventions inunder-served communities.

Currently, we are developing and initiating an ECHO autism in Northern Illinois to trainphysicians and other health professionals on supporting children and adults with autism. I amworking on a few manuscripts on the following topics: Chinese mothers’ maternal communicative behavior profile/characteristics; PTA Chinese pilot phase results, and a scopingreview on family navigation in the field of autism services. I have provided trainings for social work professionals in China on autism and I am working with a continue education organizationto develop a professional training course on autism to develop the social work workforce’ capacity on supporting children with autism and their families.

郝云杉 Hannah Hao PhD

Postdoctoral Scholar, Center for Neuroscience & Society, University of Pennsylvania

Ph.D., Cornell University (2019)

My Ph.D. study examined neural activities related to emotion regulation and how enviroenmental factors influence people’s behaviors and health (e.g., stress). During my postdoctoral study with Dr. Martha J. Farah, I utilize neuroimaging, neurogenetics and physiological methods to explore socioeconomic status and mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety and somatizing) problems.

Because autistic individuals report higher levels of anxiety, depression, and difficulties in regulating emotions, my experience in emotion processing and its neural correlates can help me contributing the autism work in CAAAC in a diffferent perspective.

I am currently a member in multiple academic associations, including Cognitive Neuroscience Society, Society for Neuroscience and Associationof Psychological Science.

Prior to my PhD study, I received academic training and had extensive practice experience as aclinical social worker in Hong Kong and Mainland China. I believe that my diverse clinical andresearch experience provided me a good foundation on issues related to autismanddevelopmental disabilities (DDs) in diverse cultural settings. As a social work doctoral student at UT Austin: my program of research focuses on investigating and addressing the needs of racial and ethnic minority families of individuals with autism/DDs. Relevant to my research interest, I co-authored a chapter in a book titled Decision Making by Individuals with Intellectual andDevelopmental Disabilities, published by Springer in 2021. I am further interested in a growingneed to map out the disparities faced by immigrant children with IDDs and their families. Currently, I serve as a core member of the autism and developmental disability research lab ledby my advisor, Dr. Sandy Magaña at UT Austin Steve Hicks School of Social Work. The labreceived grants from national and state agencies such as the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) and is in collaborations withresearchers from universities across the country. We are working to develop evidence-basedinterventions for low-resourced and underserved families of children with autism/DDs.

孟蔼宁 Helen McCabe, Ph.D., BCBA

Helen McCabe is an Associate Professor of special education and early childhood education at Daemen University. She has been interested in autism since 1992, when she was a student in Nanjing and met a little girl with autism there. That experience led her to study for her Ph.D. in special education at Indiana University. She has conducted research about families of children with autism and educational intervention in China for over 20 years, and has also provided countless trainings to parents and teachers there. In order to further her capacity building and family support work in China, she co-founded a non-profit organization, the Five Project on International Autism and Disability Support, which has provided extensive in-person and, since 2020, online training. Her collaboration with educational organizations in China is ongoing, with training and support now being provided remotely. Her research on education and support for children with autism and their families includes a focus on both the U.S. and China.
