Students need access to a car or public transportation to get between their homes and training programs. Transportation is a large barrier between low-income youth and opportunities. Having to compensate for gas expenses or the opportunity cost of a long commute makes certain training programs unaffordable for low-income youth.
BridgeYear aims to host CTD fairs, and therefore advertise their advising services and MorePathways.Org, at Title 1 schools. Title 1 schools are schools with at least 40% low-income children. The students in the schools BY serves need accessible training programs. The closer the program is, the easier and more affordable it is for a student to attend.
Blue books signify the Houston schools where BY has hosted a Career Test Drive this past year (the schools we serve). It currently displays 51 schools. Red briefcases signify the training programs listed on MorePathways. Multiple training programs at one location are represented by one briefcase.
There are a few areas in Houston where we host fairs in multiple schools yet lack training programs.
The area spanning Eisenhower High School (Aldine ISD) to Booker T. Washington High School and Scarborough High School (Houston ISD) to North Forest High School (Houston ISD) lacks programs. That entire Northern area, from Northwest Houston to East Houston, needs more programs.
Note: We should look into programs offered by Lone Star College - Houston North Victory.
BY especially focused on the Spring Branch Central (by Northbrook Middle School) corner in Northwest Houston
South Houston, from Westbury High School to Ross Shaw Sterling Aviation (Houston ISD) by Hobby airport has four schools but no programs.
In a few locations, we have a high training program density.
West of Bellaire, we served 5 schools and list 3 programs. This area is better covered, but can still use more support. The same applies for the area by White Oak Bayou Greenway, where 45 and I-10 intersect.
We have a lot of programs in the center of Houston, from River Oaks to Greater East End. We should continue focusing on central Houston, especially by Lamar High School, Northside High School, and Jack Yates High School, which all have a nearby training program.
Yay! It is time to recreate the data with all of our new training programs and CTD hosts. I have specific instructions on my GitHub, and my code + data are centralized there. You can also reference the blurb below:
Export the training programs and CTD's team school report from Salesforce as a CSV (the default ISO-8859). Run these files into the reproducible code. You'll have to download pandas, folium, and geopy libraries.
