The BBQ workshop takes place in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Byron Bay is a beautiful coastal town that has become major tourist attraction in Australia. It has it all the sun, surf, and sand. The general vibe is chic hippy, surfer core, and bourgeois bohemian.
The closest airports are the Ballina Byron gateway airport (BNK) and Gold Coast Airport (OOL). From there you can drive, or catch a bus/taxi; Byron is ~30 min from BNK, and ~45 min from OOL.
The best option for international travellers is to fly to Ballina (BNK) via the most convenient international airport, like Brisbane (BNE), Sydney (SYD), or Melbourne (MEL).
Transportation options from Ballina:
Uber or other rideshare (~30 min); estimated price of A$68.
640X bus line (~1 hour); prices start at AU$9.
Buses from the Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Ballina:
More travel information can be found here.
Try not to bring a car (traffic is crazy). We recommend that you hire a bike. Bike hire is $10 a day from Byron Bay Surf and Bike Hire.
$150 AUD. This is for conference venue hire.
Lunch is not provided, but food/drinks are easy to find around Byron Bay. It’s a hippie town, so those with dietary requirements should be able to find what they need.
Byron Bay is a tourist destination so you should budget about $25-30 per meal (although cheaper options are available) unless you plan to cook.
The BBQ workshop is run on a small budget, and we therefore cannot cover travel or accommodation costs for invited participants. We are happy to recommend accommodation and help participants organise their travel.
We recommend you book accomodation somewhere near the centre of Byron Bay. There are some good options slightly further away (for these places a bike is recommended). We recommend: airbnb.com, stayz.com.au, or the Arts Factory Lodge (the original Byron bay experience). The First Sun Holiday Park is another good budget option for shared huts, very close to the main beach in Byron Bay.
We encourage to book shared accommodation. Let us know if this option appeals to you and we will help you get in touch with other participants.
International visitors should use this interactive visa finder to determine what they need for VISA. For many passport holders, applying for an electronic visa (ETF) is quick and easy. Please let us know if you need any additional information from us, such as an invitation letter.
We are committed to keeping the BBQ workshop safe and respectful, and harassment will not be tolerated. Our full Code of Conduct can be found here.
