Research Area

Organic light emitting diodes (OLED)

Currently, OLEDs device is widely used as the display screen for mobile phone, TV, watch etc. However, there is one effect called “burn in” which happens on the screen after long term operation. This problem is common in OLED display, and it currently cannot be totally solved. Indeed, the problem is raised from the difference of degradation rate among the RGB pixels. Thanks to a lot of effort paid on development of organic materials and device architecture. For red and green OLEDs, they are good enough for their commercial application. Nevertheless, the shorter operational lifetime of the blue one is the bottleneck for industry. Thereby, to increase the operational lifetime and reliability for blue OLED is still important for the development.

 

Typically, OLEDs is a multilayers structure. Due to refraction index mismatching in these layers, resulting in total internal reflection (TIR) inside OLED, there are four kinds of optical loss mode such as “surface plasmon mode”, “waveguide mode”, “substrate mode”, “surface plasmon polariton mode” and “air mode”. These optical energy loss result in the low light outcoupling efficiency of ~20%.

Organic fluorophore can be applied not only in display and lighting but also in biosensing application. There are some drawbacks for traditional bio diagnose system. For instance, the instruments is huge and the whole test takes long time. The signal is hard to identify. And also with the breakout of COVID19 pandemic, the point of care (POC) and fast test become more and more important.

 

Quantum information as now is a hot topic, which includes quantum computing, quantum transportation, quantum sensing. One of my future interests is about quantum computing. A quantum bit (qubit) is basic unit for quantum computing. As we know, many approaches have been demonstrated to realize a qubit. For example, NV diamond, iron trap and also super conducting are common methods. Among them, super conducting is the most mature and the one technology close to commercialization. Our goal is  utilizing organic material to implement a molecule qubit.

 


Quantum dots light emitting diodes 

(QD-LED)

For the next display generation, quantum dots (QDs) LED is one of the promising display technologies in recent years, because of its attractive properties such as low operational voltage, high brightness, and pure color emission, tunable emission color and cost-effective solution process. Besides, QDs has a narrow spectrum with small FWHM resulting in a wide color-gamut coverage and make it suitable for wide color gamut display using Rec2020 or Rec 709 standard. But right now the efficiency and stability of blue QLEDs does not catch up to OLED. So far, for improving the efficiency and reliability is really urgent issue.

Because of the similar properties to OLED, it might has the possibility to POC biosensing application, too.
