Byleth's F-Tilt is a very traditional swordfighter F-Tilt, swinging in front of her in an arc. Do note, however, that the visual sword trail does not match up with the actual placement of the move, as the sword trail begins before the first hitbox becomes active.
F-Tilt is a good poke tool in neutral, being fast and safe on shield spaced. It can anti-air somewhat, but other tools (especially U-Tilt) do that job better. This due to the hitbox not covering the space above her very well. You can use Pivot Cancel F-Tilt as a grounded approach tool, which acts as a safer but weaker Dash Attack.
F-Tilt is one of Byleth's only moves that can never true combo in a normal tourney-legal environment. It can be used as a combo ender, but is not reccomended as often there are better options.
