同じき鬼、また人の死にたる親の為に、水を汲みて施す滴りを、僅かに当たり付きて飲みて、命を保つなり。
English Translation
It is said that the same ghosts, preserve their lives by merely acquiring water drops that the humans scooped up and gave to for the sake of their dead parents.
Explanatory Notes
Passage 2 shows another way for Jikisui to stay alive. Please see this high resolution image depicting how Jikisui were acquiring water drops. Again, the humans seemed not to notice their presence.
なり- An auxiliary verb 助動詞 which means Hearsay or aural supposition in Classical Japanese as it follows 終止形 (Final Form). It has the same function as ~そうです in Modern Japanese.
