The Graduate Student Committee was established at The Wildlife Society Annual Meeting in 2021 as a special committee in the Biometrics Working Group (BWG). The committee's objectives are to ensure graduate student input in the BWG, centralize the exchange of biometrics information among members of The Wildlife Society, and encourage students and wildlife professionals to become BWG members.
The committee is working to achieve its objectives by building a resource repository and empowering graduate students:
Resource Repository: The Graduate Student Committee has built a public database of biometric resources (tutorials, books, blogs, etc.) and webinar recordings to assist students and professionals in developing and expanding appropriate technical skills for use in the research and management of wildlife resources. The committee has also begun providing virtual workshops on various coding topics to help graduate student build new skills.
Empowering Graduate Students: The Graduate Student Committee is working hard to provide opportunities to connect with senior Biometrics professionals in wildlife research and management. These opportunities include social events and the Ask a Biometrician session during each Annual Meeting of The Wildlife Society, and member spotlights to help get to know Biometrics Working Group Members. The committee is also working hard to build a virtual member map, so that student and professionals can connect with each other locally.
To ensure graduate student participation in the BWG, this committee is chaired by graduate students. The committee has developed its structure and elections process to facilitate communication between the committee and BWG board and recruit graduate students and BWG members to serve on the committee. To get involved, please contact our co-chairs Jordan Heiman and Katie Gundermann.

The Graduate Student Special Committee Seeks Volunteers!
The graduate student special committee seeks volunteer BWG members to join the committee and help it achieve its objectives. Despite the committee’s name, all BWG members from any professional level are encouraged to volunteer. We meet virtually once a month.
Do I need to be a BWG member to join the Graduate Student Committee?
Yes.
How do I become a BWG member?
Login to your TWS account. On the splash page, hover over the Membership tab and select "Add Organization Unit Membership." Under "Working Groups," select "Add Working Groups." Select "Biometrics Working Group" and pay the $5 fee.
The Biometrics Working Group Graduate Student Committee seeks feedback on how the committee can best serve BWG members and gauge members' interest in a potential new mentorship program. Please complete the short (< 5 minute) survey by clicking the link below. The committee is interested in feedback from all members (students, early career professionals, established professionals, retired, etc.) working in any sector (academia, government, etc.).
Please contact the co-chairs, Jordan Heiman and Katie Gundermann with any questions.
