Crack! Suddenly the entire room went dead silent. There I was a fourteen year old boy laying petrified on the wrestling mat. Unable to move and fearing the worst as my team slowly gathered around. The loud snap came from my spine which had been hyper extended.
Ever since I was a young boy I was always active and played multiple sports. My eighth grade year I had the privilege of being one of the few wrestling team captains. During one fateful practice a friend and teammate of mine decided to push a little too far. The result was a break of my pedicle in my lumbar spine which caused my L4 and L5 to have grade two slippage. I was an eighth grader diagnosed with spondylolisthesis. My athletic doctor warned me unless I wanted to be paralyzed I shouldn't lift more than ten pounds or compete in contact sports again. I had to wear a heavy duty back brace and swap out my brand new JanSport backpack for a rolling one. Humiliated and depressed I cursed my fate and wondered why me.
After six months of countless chiropractic visits and no relief in sight I decided to take things into my own hands. I tossed my brace aside and began my new uncharted fitness journey. Through many painful trial and errors I slowly began to build up strength in my back. Although I wasn't able to wrestle again due to the stress on my low back I managed to play football my freshman and senior year of high school. Halfway through my varsity season I was overjoyed when I got to start as a first string strong safety. I felt as if my life was given back to me.
During my freshman and sophomore year of college I began coaching youth basketball. I found joy in teaching others. This led me to become a swim instructor and eventually a personal trainer. Over a decade in my career as a trainer and coach has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in my life. I wake up each morning with a fire inside to help others and teach them there's always hope.
It has been over 20 years since my accident and now my back feels stronger than ever. Today I'm able to safely execute a 300 pound deadlift without any belt or straps. Everyone has their own challenges and obstacles to face in life, but I'm confident together we can overcome them. Join me on a lifelong journey to improve your mind, body, and spirit.
Thanks for your time and can't wait to work with you!
