FAQs

What is a tech credential or certification?

Technology credentials and certifications are offered by professional associations, industry leaders, and other organizations to verify that an individual meets an approved set of standards for using an application, managing a system, or employing a tactic or process.

Some of these certifications are free; some have a cost associated with them. Most programs are offered online and are self-paced.

Selected students will work with the Start Smart team to identify the credential and certification programs best suited for them.

What are some examples of certification programs I could complete as part of Start Smart?

Why is there an application process?

This first year of Start Smart is pilot program, and a limited amount of funds available to cover 20 students in the Learn & Earn and Costs Covered Tracks and 10 in the Tech & Cyber track. Our goal is to have a successful pilot and expand the program in the future.

The Start Smart team will work with you to identify the right program for you. Below are just some possibilities -- we are open to many other options, including any that interest you or are specific to your niche.

I'm interested in entrepreneurship, but haven't launched a business. Can I still apply?

Yes, yes, yes! Please do.

"Launching a venture" doesn't always mean start a business. You could be interested in starting a nonprofit, a social enterprise program, or an event.

You might have a fleshed out idea, or just the beginning kernel of an idea.

Some BW students have launched businesses, and some have launched and want to develop them further.

Wherever you fall on this spectrum, you are eligible for Start Smart!

Can I work with LaunchNET, the Digital Marketing Center or the Computer Science program if I do not apply?

Of course! BW Start Smart is just one program. LaunchNET, the DMC and CS have opportunities throughout the year.
