Established by family and friends, the Brendan Woodworth golf tournament and scholarship foundation celebrates a life lived well with purpose and memorializes a special and unique young man who touched everyone he knew.
Brendan (“Woody” “Melrose”) Woodworth was born on April 22, 1995. He was the son of Alan and Maureen and brother to Meghan. He attended Horace Mann School in Melrose and Melrose Middle school before graduating from Pope John High School in Everett, class of 2014.
Brendan had a passion for sports. He played youth baseball, hockey, soccer and lacrosse in Melrose and went on to play varsity hockey and baseball at Pope John. He was an avid Boston sports fan and especially loved the Bruins and Red Sox.
Brendan‘s life got off to a rough beginning. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as an infant and received a life-saving heart transplant at eight weeks of age. The kindness and generosity of strangers gave Brendan a second chance. Although the heart transplant did not define his life, it did define the generous spirit in which he lived.
For 24 years, Brendan defied medical odds and surpassed expectations. His fighting spirit propelled him beyond boundaries as he quietly and heroically endured a lifetime of medical interventions. Despite academic challenges, Brendan persevered and graduated from Plymouth State University, class of 2018, with a degree in communications and sales. He had just begun a professional career in sales at Staples Corporation.
Being present and connected to family and friends was paramount to Brendan. He was fiercely loyal and always a true friend. Brendan’s sense of humor – whether a mischievous prank or an outrageously funny comment- was his greatest gift.
Brendan had every gift with the exception of years, and his life suddenly ended on November 22, 2019 after a cardiac arrest related to rejection of his heart transplant.
Brendan was humble and genuine in the way he experienced the world. It is this legacy of authenticity and hope that the golf tournament and scholarship foundation wishes to honor.
