Home Economics is the study of any aspect of the general population and in particular, that which concerns home-based labor. It should be noted that Economics in all its forms, including literature, has nothing to do with the social sciences. It is simply a branch of the broad scientific disciplines of sociology, psychology, and political science.

In the United States, we practice a 'labor theory of value', which sees our concept of money as a derivative of the labor effort involved in the production of commodities. But in most countries, the value of a product is determined not by the labor it takes to produce it, but by the price it sells for to the public. A monetary value is not the sum of a person's actual labor and effort, but the monetary value of a seller will accept for a commodity at a given time and place.

The study of Home Economics concerns the general population, those engaged in home-based and related occupations such as home nursing, child care, craftsmanship, or handicrafts. As such, it is largely concerned with the personal and material conditions of workers in these areas.

Perhaps the best-known field of Home Economics is that of child-care services. Such services are primarily the result of large government, employers, and non-profit organizations providing income security to parents. In this situation, the study of Home Economics is concerned with income security, and specifically, with looking at the problems and solutions that can be fashioned to meet the needs of families as they face the new challenges of economic recession.

With regards to child-care services, the study of Home Economics can be applied to the development of stronger, more positive social systems which can promote the socialization of young children. In other words, it is concerned with the promotion of human well-being and societal norms in regard to the care of children. And, it should be noted that the business of home care also has a very significant role to play in meeting the problems of the growing under-class, the elderly, and the disabled.

And yet another aspect of Home Economics is related to child-care services. Because of a need to enhance income security, tax policy is being used to reduce the costs of child-care, and to provide more funding for social services. These changes, along with the personal choices by parents and employers, have resulted in a situation where the quality of child-care is at a considerable disadvantage to more organized, professional, and well-compensated alternatives.

The research papers on Home Economics are concerned with the consequences of changing situations. Specifically, they discuss how individual preferences and the economy, and in particular, the actions of business owners and governments, can be affected by the collective behavior of the mass of citizens. These research papers provide important background information, as well as do not go into detail about how specific solutions should be created or applied.
