Butte College is seeking colorful and innovative murals to create a vibrant and multicultural setting for students, faculty and staff at our main campus location in Oroville, California. This is an ongoing effort to create an inviting and inspiring environment for students of all disciplines, ages and backgrounds.
Are you a Northern California artist with mural experience? We invite you to submit mural proposals for the 4 available sites. Applicants may submit proposals for multiple sites.
The theme of the design is up to the artist (or artist team) but should reflect on the mission and values of Butte College, our commitment to equity, inclusivity, anti-racism and sustainability as well as the use of the building and surrounding environment.

Project Sponsor: The Butte College Associated Students. The Associated Student Executive Board is a group of elected student officers that represent all students and whose purpose is to make Butte College the best environment for students to learn, grow and fulfill their goals! The A.S. manages budgets and records for the Student Representation and Student Activity Fee as well as the General Reserve which is used to fund innovative projects to enhance the student experience at the college. The Associated Students (A.S.) mission is to effectively represent student needs, keep students informed of student related issues, and promote cultural, social, and leadership opportunities for all students.

Selection Process: Proposals will be reviewed and selected by a panel of Butte college faculty, students and staff who will bring multiple perspectives to the selection process, including a range of races, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
Clarity and professionalism of submission materials will be considered.
The Review Panel reserves the right to reject any proposals that do not meet the goals of the project.
Artist Responsibilities
The artists are responsible for the following:
Renting of equipment such as a lift or scaffolding
Preparation of the wall
** Butte College will take responsibility for the final sealant of all murals.
Eligibility & Requirements
Lead Artist must be 18 years old and over. Artists under the age of 18 may be included on an artist team with at least one artist who is 18 years old or older.
Must be bonded and provide proof of insurance (min. $1 million policy)
Though previous mural experience is not required, applicants are encouraged to include a mural artist on their team.
Must be a resident of Northern California; between Sacramento and Oregon border, with priority given to artists that currently reside in our service region of Butte and Glenn counties.
Must be available to paint/install the mural on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the month of October, 2021.
Must be available to meet with the Planning Team at the completion of the project for a short interview and photos.
May be asked to make design changes by the Campus Facilities Staff, Project Review Panel, Butte College Associated Students, and/or the Campus Leadership Team
Artist signature must be included on the wall, in a space no larger than two square foot

Artist bio. Please include your connection to Butte College or Butte County Region if you have one.
Artist statement about the mural theme/design (2 to 3 paragraphs) - including relevance to any or all of the following: Butte College’s mission, values, and/or the college’s commitment to equity, inclusivity, anti-racism and sustainability.
Proposed budget - Applicants are encouraged to provide quotes for any outside contracting or fabrication needs during the project. Submit as an Excel file.

Five (5) to ten (10) images of previous relevant/mural artwork submitting high quality JPG files (do not use gifs, tiffs or other image formats). If as an artist team, samples of artist teams’ work should also be submitted identifying their samples.
List of at least three (3) Professional References. Please include name, address, phone number and email address for each reference.

Butte College is seeking proposals for a mural wall wrapping around three sides of the building (red area walls in the photo only). The Campus Center is a social hub. This building is used by everyone, as it houses a cafe, dining area, student lounge, conference center, bookstore, and Associated Students offices.

Budget: The all-inclusive payment for this project is $13,000.
The Arts building exterior wall facing East in the courtyard behind room 137. The wall is the upper horizontal, whitish painted area with no window interruptions.

Elevation: The stucco wall begins 6.5 feet from ground level.

Budget: The all-inclusive payment for this project is $18,000.
Biology, Geology, Science Labs take place in this building. Students graduate to professions such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, biomedical technologies, nutraceuticals, food processing, and others that dedicate their efforts to creating products to improve the lives of organisms. This is a highly trafficked area throughout the day. The long wall on the Life Science building faces West.
You may propose a single design that spans the entire wall, a portion or separate compositions on each panel.

Wall Surface: Medium Density Fiberboard Panels to be installed by Butte College Facilities Management Services
Budget: The all-inclusive payment for this project is $10,000.
Students take classes in this building that prepare them for occupations such as floriculture, nursery production, landscaping, park maintenance, turfgrass management, research, ag education, and retail nursery. This wall is located next to a working plant nursery including multiple greenhouses, ponds and fountains. The area across from this wall will be developed as a demonstration garden.
Note: There is a metal and PVC pipe attached to the left side of this wall. It can be painted.
