RACE DAY INFORMATION
What to expect:
With 9 middle schools competing, it gets very crowded at Shedd Park. Students leave the Butler approximately 3:15-3:30 on a bus. We arrive at Shedd and we put our backpacks and water bottles at the picnic tables under the pavilion closest to the water park. Students are expected to follow the same rules as at school and to remain with the group at all times. When it is time, they will be doing their usual warm up, group run and then relaxing while we wait for all schools to arrive. Approximately 4:30 the boys race will begin with the girls starting approximately 10 minutes later.
After your child races:
Your child needs to check in with one of the coaches. If you child receives a "Stick" or a "card" they must bring the stick / card to Ms. Burgess so it can be recorded. If that is not done, even if you placed 1st, it will not count. Once all the runners are done, the XC officials will announce how each school performed and the results are also posted on the link here live (top of this box).
When can you take your child home after the race?
After you child runs, he/she need to check in with a coach and the parent/guardian is expected to sign out the child. If the student is going back to the Butler on the return bus, you can opt to pick them up there. Parents must be at the school for pick up promptly when we return.
REMINDERS FOR PRACTICE
We practice EVERY DAY (Monday-Friday) from 3:00-4:30. RAIN OR SHINE. It is mandatory. If you are absent, you need a note from your guardian or you will NOT compete in the upcoming meet. There is no transportation home so you need to provide your own transportation.
There are 2 more Saturday Practices from 9:00-10:00 at Shedd Park. These are not mandatory but highly recommended. You are expected to get your own transportation to and from Shedd park to these practices. Running the course on Saturdays and doing hill work helps you be prepared to run the distance and to strengthen your running.
We expect you to show up every day ready to run. That means wearing clothes to school that you can run in: running shoes, shorts/loose pants, loose shirts, socks.
We expect you to bring your own water EVERY day. We will provide water as well to refill your water when needed, but being a runner also means being prepared and aware of what your body needs to perform well and that means to stay hydrated.
We expect you to bring a towel and know you will be sitting on the ground and will be sweating. Plan for it! Embrace it!
We expect that you follow our Butler Code of Conduct. If you are not being responsible, respectful and are unsafe, you will be asked to leave the team.
We expect you to RUN. A cross country race is 1.7 miles long so our practices are designed to help you build your strength and skill as a runner.
We also expect you to have fun!
