Bush Grid Privacy Policy
Effective 7 October 2026
In short: Bush Grid does not collect, store or sell any of your personal information. Your location, waypoints, bearings and tracks stay on your own iPhone and Apple Watch. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
Who we are
Bush Grid is published by Bryan Nouwens ("we", "us"), an independent developer in New South Wales, Australia. Bush Grid is not made or endorsed by the NSW Rural Fire Service or any other agency. You can contact us at bushgrid@bjnouwens.com.
Information we collect
None. Bush Grid has no server, no user accounts and no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking code. We do not receive your location or anything you enter into the app.
Information the app uses on your device
Location. With your permission, Bush Grid uses your device's location to show where you are, give your grid reference, and work out distance and bearing. It is used only on your device and is never sent to us. The app uses your location in the background only while you are recording a track or have the Lock Screen display turned on. iOS shows a location indicator while it does.
Compass. The compass heading is read on your device to show direction and take bearings. It is not stored or sent anywhere.
Your points and settings. Waypoints, observation points, bearings, saved and recent locations, track logs and settings are stored only on your device. They are kept until you delete them in the app or delete the app.
Clipboard. The app reads your clipboard only when you tap Paste, and writes to it only when you tap Copy.
Apple Watch and Lock Screen
If you use the Apple Watch app, the iPhone app sends your current target (its grid reference, position and name) directly to your paired watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity. The watch uses its own location to show distance and direction. The Lock Screen and Dynamic Island display is updated on your iPhone. None of this passes through our systems.
Services provided by Apple
Maps. Map imagery comes from Apple Maps. To show the map, your device asks Apple for the area being viewed. This is handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy.
Purchases. Supporter subscriptions, lifetime purchases and tips are processed by Apple. We never see your name, Apple Account or payment details. Apple gives us only summary sales reports.
Crash reports. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device settings (Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may give us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. You can turn this off at any time. TestFlight beta testers may also send feedback and crash reports through TestFlight.
Backups. Like most apps, Bush Grid's data is included in your iCloud or computer backups if you have backups turned on. Those backups are managed by Apple and you.
Sharing
Bush Grid only shares information when you choose to. For example, when you tap Share on a location or export a track as a GPX file, you choose the app and the people it goes to. What happens after that is governed by the app or service you chose.
Deleting your information
Because everything is stored on your device, you are in control:
Remove points with Remove or Clear All in the Waypoints or Observers list.
Delete saved locations in Recent Locations (clock button).
Delete a recorded track with Clear track in the Track Log.
Delete the app to remove all of its data from your device.
We hold no copy, so there is nothing for us to delete.
Children
Bush Grid is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Bush Grid handles information, we will update this page and the effective date above. If a change means the app starts collecting information, we will ask for your consent in the app first.
