This course deals with theories and practices of communication in a business set-up. The course covers both verbal and non-verbal communication theories and applications, visual communication, presentation techniques, as well as contemporary communication issues. The course will equip students with skills necessary to prepare business letters, reports, memos, minutes, job applications, resumes, and to effectively present before audience.
Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to acquaint students with basic theories and practical applications in various scenarios of business communication. It also aims at enhancing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills in a business set up. The course will also be aimed at presentation skills and job-seeking communication.
1. Importance and role of communication in business set-up, main forms of communication in business, the communication process and written communication, ethics in communication.
2. Language skills for clarity and conciseness, process model of communication, barriers to effective communication.
3. Perception theories and impact on communication, planning & organizing written communication.
4. Writing various business letters (approval, refusal, collection, negative & positive news, sales letters etc.), and memos, official emails, and other forms of intra-office communication.
5. Oral communication, graphic and visual aids, listening techniques, making presentations.
6. Proposal and reports, planning, organizing, and preparing reports, presentation of reports.
7. Employment communication, making an impression through communication, job applications and preparation of resume, preparing and facing an interview.
Important: Various course materials will be provided in the form of samples and guidelines for practical communication and skill enhancement.
Please be on time for your classes. Make sure you are ready to take class notes and interact with the instructor whenever needed.

You are most welcome to ask questions/put comments during the class session by raising your hand first. Class participation is encouraged and rewarded.
There will be no make-up of quizzes, no matter what the reason could be. Improvement examination, if applicable, will be based on the notices as per the UIU policy.
