Charlotte Burts
Hello and welcome to my GLD ePortfolio! My name is Charlotte Burts and I am a nursing student in my senior year at the University of South Carolina. When applying for college, I didn't know what I wanted to be, but I did know that I have always had a passion for biological sciences and helping others. After spending a lot of time trying to figure out who I wanted to be, I found the path of nursing where I could combine those two interests in a meaningful way. Although I never knew how immersed in the world of nursing I would become. My first nursing research course happened in the fall of my freshman year, and I have been captivated ever since, which has taken my career path and interests outside of just the classroom.
My Pathway of distinction is focused in research, which is what I have spent much of my extracurricular time doing in college. My best friend Ainsley has a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as PCOS. When I heard through one of my classes that there was a professor in the college of nursing who studied PCOS, I jumped on the chance to better understand this condition and what it must be like for someone who means so much to me. Dr. Pamela Wright allowed me to do so and learn so much more about what research could be as an undergraduate nursing student.
Throughout my time participating in research, I have learned so many things and had the opportunity to go so many new places, including Harvard University to present my Honors thesis! I have also had opportunities such as presenting through the University of Connecticut and the Southern Nursing Research Society Symposium, as well as being a recipient of both a Magellan scholar and Magellan mini-grant during my studies!
While my focus in college has been very different from what I expected, I would not change it for the world. As you will see from my key insights, I have had so many amazing experiences both inside and outside of the classroom about what it means to contribute to research and being a lifelong learner as a nurse. It isn’t always easy, but that is when you learn the most and develop skills like resilience, perseverance, and creativity. Due to all my positive experiences, I wanted to center my leadership section around a framework for encouraging greater involvement in nursing research among undergraduate nursing students at the University of South Carolina. This aligns with my future interests of attending graduate school to advance my scope of practice as a nurse, and have a basis of always reminding myself and others the significance that research holds in the clinical setting for those we care about.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my ePortfolio!
