Footwear & Apparel Choices
Embrace the Wet: You will be hiking directly in the flowing creek for a significant portion of the trail. The water depth typically ranges from ankle to knee-deep.
Shoes: Do not wear flip-flops, sandals, or old sneakers with worn-down tread. You need sturdy hiking shoes or specialized water boots with sticky rubber outsoles to grip slimy, wet boulders and river rocks.
Ditch Cotton Socks: Wear neoprene socks or synthetic wool blends. Regular cotton socks absorb freezing water and stay soaked, quickly causing blisters.
Clothing: Opt for quick-drying, synthetic layers. The slot canyon sections are heavily shaded and can feel incredibly chilly compared to the exposed, hot sun at the start of the trail.
Trail Terrain & Technical Elements
The Stats: It is a moderate 3.8 to 4.4 miles round-trip out-and-back trail with roughly 600 feet of elevation gain.
The Obstacles: Reaching the famous first waterfall takes about 1.5 miles. To continue past it to the second waterfall, you must scale a 20-foot ladder (typically a log with metal rungs bolted to it) placed right next to the rushing water. It is slippery, can feel unstable, and requires a steady hand and a good grip on the safety ropes.
