Welcome to Burnaby Speedskating Club.
Our club was founded in 1968 and has been providing opportunity and access to the sport of speed skating to local and surrounding communities ever since. Our training sessions take place at Kensington Park Arena in Burnaby.
Our club operated under the name “Haida” since 1968 when it was formed as part of a community affiliation with the UBC Thunderbirds athletics programs. The club moved to Kensington Arena in Burnaby in 1972. In 2017, the club officially dropped the name “Haida”, as the club and its members (former and present) have no affiliation or relationship with the Haida Nation peoples. The club is in the process of transitioning to a new club name and logo.
In 2018 the Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary!
Starting on September 7th, 2024, Burnaby Speed Skating Club will be hosting Saturday Try-It Sessions for anyone who wants to try this fast and fun sport! It includes 3 consecutive Saturday sessions at our home rink - Kensington Ice Arena. We'll be hosting another round of Try-It Sessions in January 2025
For Try-It registration and inquiries, please email to bbyspeedskating@gmail.com.

Burnaby Speed Skating and the speed skating community received sad news;
Agatha Vanderstarre, Ariana's mother, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021.
Agatha was once described as the heart and soul of the Burnaby club, keeping it alive through some very challenging times. Serving on the executive for years, she was always quick to welcome new skaters to the club with her wonderful smile, providing encouragement and support for everyone. Agatha also served as a role model for all of us with her love of skating. She competed into her eighties, setting record after record in both long track and short track, travelling around the province and across the country in an era when most long track meets took place on outdoor ovals, often in bitter cold and wind. She just loved to skate! Of course, her two favorite skaters were her daughter, Ariana, and her grandson, Teunis. Her love for them shone brightly.
Agatha was a remarkable woman, possessing an inspiring 'joie de vivre' and an unswerving courage to push boundaries. The entire Burnaby club offers deepest condolences to Ariana, Teunis and the entire family in this difficult time.
Regards,
BBY Exec.
