BCLC Mission Statement


Bull City Literacy Council, comprised of educators and other community stakeholders, is united to collaborate, advocate, and do the work to ensure access to literacy is not determined by race, age, gender, finances, neighborhood, politics, documentation status, ability, identity, orientation, native language, and history.

Our mission is to:

  • Empower stakeholders as literacy advocates and stewards with quality training to teach & promote literacy for all

  • promote and advocate for literacy events, efforts, and issues in Durham from public agencies, faith based organizations, schools, non-profit organizations, and community groups

  • Engage families and community members in culturally relevant literacy learning opportunities for all ages, needs, and abilities

Current Projects

Culturally Responsive Classroom libraries

The goal of this project is simple:

Get culturally responsive titles into Durham schools.

We conduct book fairs, nights out, and other fund raising efforts to collect and purchase books from our wish list and then get them into classroom libraries across Durham.
