One of the breakout sessions for the Building Power Conference will be facilitated through affinity groups.
Read on to learn more about what affinity groups are and why we chose them for this part of the conference
What are affinity groups?
We use Boston College's definition of affinity groups, "An affinity group represents the interests and concerns of traditionally underrepresented populations and/or protected classes of people." This year's Building Power Conference centers issues related to housing disenfranchisement, land sovereignty, and sustainable living, with racial identity serving as the foundation for the conference content. With this in mind, attendees will join a group based on their self-identified racial or ethnic identity. This conference is not exclusive to people of traditionally underrepresented populations, so we have created groups that we hope everyone can see themselves in.
Why use affinity groups?
During this session, we will be delving into themes that can be heavy and challenging to discuss in groups of people who hold different levels of privilege and oppression.
Often people of color, especially Black folx, bear the brunt of explaining white extremism and its impacts to white and non-Black people of color. We aim to instead ensure that all participants have an equal opportunity to learn about and challenge white extremist, colonialist, anti-Black ideologies that are embedded in the fabric of our society.
Which affinity groups will be offered?
Affinity groups are determined by you, the attendees. This conference is not exclusive to people of traditionally underrepresented populations, so we always aim to create groups that we hope everyone can see themselves in. That said, we will not be able to finalize affinity groups until after registration closes. If you have questions about this, please feel free to reach out to us at BuildingPowerUM@gmail.com
Registration is open from 9/28/2022 to 10/19/2022. To register later, please email BuildingPowerUM@gmail.com
