TB Studio (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the Bugscope mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the App.
By using Bugscope, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Bugscope helps you identify insects from photos. The App can:
Use your device camera or photo library to capture or select an image
Send that image to a third-party AI service for identification
Store your scan history locally on your device
We do not require you to create an account to use Bugscope.
When you scan or identify an insect, the App accesses:
Photos you take with the camera, or
Images you choose from your photo library
These images are used only to identify the insect and show you results inside the App.
To provide identification, insect photos are sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to OpenAI for processing.
OpenAI receives:
The image you submit for identification
Technical data needed to complete the request (such as request metadata)
We do not send your name, email, or account information with these requests, because Bugscope does not use user accounts.
OpenAI’s handling of data is governed by its own policies:

If you tap “Save to history,” the App stores information locally on your device, including:
Species identification results (name, description, safety level, and related details)
Date and time of the scan
A reference to your photo (where available)
A generic location label (e.g. “Saved scan”) — Bugscope does not collect GPS or precise location
This history is stored using your device’s local storage and is not uploaded to our servers.
The App may request:

To photograph insects for identification
Photos / media
To let you pick an existing photo from your gallery
Internet
To send images for AI identification and load species images in the field guide
You can deny camera or photo access and still browse the field guide, but identification from new photos will not work without camera or gallery access.
Bugscope does not intentionally collect:
Names, email addresses, or phone numbers (no account system)
Precise GPS location
Contacts, SMS, call logs, or microphone audio
Payment or financial information (the App is free; any future purchases would be handled by Google Play)
Advertising identifiers for targeted advertising (we do not run ads in the current version)
We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the current version of the App.
We use the information described above to:
Identify insects from your photos
Display identification results
Save and show your scan history on your device
Improve reliability and security of the App
We do not sell your personal information.
Photos sent for identification: Processed by OpenAI as part of the identification request. We do not operate our own servers to store these images long-term. Retention by OpenAI is subject to OpenAI’s policies.
Scan history: Kept on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App. Uninstalling Bugscope removes locally stored history.
We do not maintain a central database of your scans.
We share data only as follows:
OpenAI — insect photos submitted for identification
Google Play — standard app distribution and crash/update infrastructure provided by the platform (if applicable)
Legal requirements — if required by law, regulation, or valid legal process
We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Bugscope is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will take steps to delete it where applicable.
We use industry-standard measures such as HTTPS for data in transit to OpenAI. Local scan history is stored on your device and protected by your device’s operating system.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
Important: The current version of the App communicates with OpenAI from the device. You should not submit images you consider highly sensitive.
You can:
Deny or revoke camera or photo permissions in your device settings
Delete scan history by clearing app data or uninstalling the App
Stop using identification features at any time
Depending on your country, you may have additional rights (access, deletion, correction, objection). Because we do not operate user accounts or store your data on our servers, most requests can be fulfilled by managing permissions or deleting the App locally. For other requests, contact us below.
If you use Bugscope outside your home country, your information (including photos sent for identification) may be processed in countries where OpenAI or its service providers operate, which may have different data protection laws than your country.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy with a new “Last updated” date. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
For material changes, we may provide additional notice in the App or on our store listing where appropriate.
