Citation Tools

The major citation manager software packages allow for creating a new citation style - which is great! Except that at this point they do not have the capability to create the links we have outlined in Buffalo Style Citation. Here are some work arounds - and we will be adding to this list of tools!

Zotero

Zotero offers a robust and fully functional free citation manager software. To create Buffalo Style Citations in Zotero follow these steps:

  1. Open your Zotero desktop application.

  2. Download the CSL file HERE.

  3. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Cite

  4. Click on the + button at the bottom to add a citation style.

  5. Choose the file you saved in step 2. Choose this as your citation style.

  6. Using Word - create your document and insert your citations as usual.

  7. When finished - unlink your citations from Zotero (available in the Word citation menu).

  8. Highlight the author link and cut it. Select the author name and right click to add a link - paste the link into the window and hit ok.

  9. Do the same as step 8 for the title and title link.

  10. Replace all "et al" with "+".
