Additional Information
The Buffalo Island Museum in Monette, Arkansas is located in the former First National Bank Building (later it was called Monette State Bank) and was originally built in 1918. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first museum was founded by Gerald "Boots" Pitts in 1997 and was located in the former Monette School lunchroom in the City Park. Mr. Pitts passed away in 2005 and the city of Monette continued to operate and maintain the museum. David and Karen Wallace donated the bank building to the city of Monette and it was decided to locate the museum there. With a grant and many donations (both physically and financially) the building's roof was replaced, floors reworked, walls repaired, and bathrooms installed. City employees and museum members worked hard to get the museum relocated. The grand opening of the Buffalo Island Museum was May 30 and 31, 2009. Admission to the museum is free although donations are always appreciated to help with expenses.
Exhibit areas include Doctor's Office, Kitchen, Beauty Shop, Farming, Hunting, Bedroom, Toys, Farming tools, Music, School Memorbilia, and a Reading Room.
