“a sprawling, comic epic about luck and love, fortitude and forgiveness and the magic of everyday“. - Penguin Books
This is a timeless Australian classic. The story revolves around two poor farming families who both move into a shared boarding house in the city of Perth after the depression and end of World War 2 (1943 to 1963). It follows their trials, troubles and joys and daily life as they coexist as families in this distinct time in history.
Shona said “I loved listening to this audio book. Tim Winton is a wonderful writer. It was the perfect yarn to have nearby during the 2020 lockdown in New Zealand.”

Sharon said “If you think being in lockdown is hard I recommend reading this true story of Lale Sokolov. Your attitude will change.
As a 24 year old in April 1942 Lale is told that he will be working for the Germans. He has a two day train trip to arrive at Auschwitz. He realises he will have to get a job within the camp so that he can survive. He eventually gets the job of the “Tatowierer”, who is the person in charge of tattooing fellow prisoners' wrists. He meets Gita when he has to tattoo her wrist and they fall in love. It is a beautiful love story amongst all the horrors of war and inhumanity.”
