Draining your central heating system doesn't have to be stressful. This step-by-step guide simplifies the combi and conventional systems process, from radiator leaks to cold spots or regular maintenance.
Why Should I Drain My Central Heating System?
Emergency Repairs: Respond quickly to leaks, cold radiators, or system malfunctions.
Routine Maintenance: Prevent rust and sludge build-up for optimal system efficiency.
Tools You Will Need
Hosepipe
Radiator key
Spanner
Screwdriver
Bucket
Towels
Steps for Draining Your Central Heating System
Turn Off the System: Let the boiler cool completely before disconnecting the water supplies.
Disconnect Water Supplies: Switch off the main water stop valve or cold feed to the cylinder and allow it to drain completely before reconnecting the main water stop valve or cold feed.
Attach a Hosepipe: Attach the drain valve hosepipe using a jubilee clip and secure it outside or in a bucket.
Open the Drain Valve: Carefully open the valve using a spanner or radiator key and slowly release water by opening its stem.
Bleed Radiators: Open radiator bleed valves to allow air into and accelerate drainage.
Drain Completely: Allow 20-30 minutes of total drainage time before securely closing all drain and bleed valves.
Seal The Valves: Turn off the drain to safely bleed valves.
Refill the System: Switch on the water supply, add an inhibitor, bleed radiators, and check for leaks before refilling your system with new water.
To Drain Without a Drain Valve
If your system lacks a drain-off valve:
Shut off boiler and water source.
Close radiator valves (TRV and lock-shield) on one radiator.
Use a speed-fit tap to connect a hosepipe to one radiator.
Loosen radiator nuts so water drains into a bucket,
Now, loosen and open all of your bleed valves until all system elements have been completely emptied out.
How Long Will It Take?
With a Drain Valve: 20 mins to 1 hour.
Without One: 1 to 2 hours.
How Often Should You Drain Your System?
Maintain your central heating system regularly to increase efficiency, prevent sludge build-up, and increase lifespan. It won't harm anything except draining.
