What are incoming and outgoing BT Email servers?

IMAP and POP are the protocols or technologies that allow you to download your email messages to your computer or device. To determine whether you’re using IMAP or POP, open your email software, choose the mail account you wish to learn about, and then access its settings or properties. Check whether the “type” of the Mail Server is IMAP or POP.

IMAP Settings

  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

  • Port: 993 (this will automatically populate if you select SSL encryption)

  • SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

  • Your email address, the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com, is your username.

  • The btinternet or btopenworld is your password.

  • Path/folder of origin:

  • Separator for folders: . (end of a sentence)

“Secure password authentication” should not be enabled (SPA). It is not required when using SSL encryption and will not function.

If your IMAP client allows it, you should also create the following folders:

  • Sent Items

  • Trash

  • Drafts

POP3 Settings

  • mail.btinternet.com is the incoming mail server.

  • Port: 995 (Selecting SSL encryption should populate this field automatically)

  • Encryption: SSL is enabled (but not STARTTLS)

  • Your email address, the @btinternet.com or @btopenworld.com, is your username.

  • Your btinternet or btopenworld password is your password.

From the folder: POP will pull emails from your inbox by default.

SMTP Configuration

  • mail.btinternet.com is the outgoing mail server.

  • 465 (this may not be filled in automatically when you pick SSL, so double-check)

  • Encryption: SSL is enabled (but not STARTTLS)

  • PLAIN Authentication

Your email address, the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com, is your username.

The btinternet or btopenworld is your password.
