Brest-Technopôle Association for Postdocs
Brest-Technopôle Association for Postdocs (BTAP) is a dynamic new associative organisation dedicated to providing support and guidance to postdoctoral researchers based at Brest Technopôle. BTAP is composed of current and former French and international researchers working on marine sciences from various structures (UBO, IFREMER, CNRS, IRD, and IMT).
BTAP’s first steps took place during pleasant social events with postdocs and their families from diverse cultural backgrounds. These events provided a relaxed and supportive environment where we could discuss our experiences, both professional and personal. A recurring theme was the challenges faced by international researchers in adapting to life and work in Brest without fluency in French. We shared tips on navigating French and institutional administrative procedures and everyday life, acknowledging that mutual help, although valuable, showed certain limitations. Between laughs and reflections, we explored potential solutions, aware of the complexity of the matter and the need for a long-term more structured approach. We decided to formalise our group in late 2023 by organising monthly meetings to keep our association alive, and of course, we also meet weekly to keep our social life alive and not (always) talk about work.
Our mission is to support the smooth integration of new postdoctoral researchers into a welcoming and inclusive community. We aim to foster peer connections, propose initiatives for career development and science vulgarisation, and create a space for sharing valuable knowledge on institutional and administrative procedures. By promoting awareness of available social benefits and enhancing the overall work environment, we strive to make both professional and personal life in Brest more enjoyable for postdocs.
