Axel Cerón González

Axel Cerón González is a soil scientist and environmental historian. Joint Ph.D. student at KU Leuven and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.He serves as the vice-chairman of the Young and Early Career Scientist Working Group within the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), created in 2022. His remarkable achievement lies in reshaping the IUSS by pioneering a historical era of youth engagement, fostering a deeper understanding of soil science diversities.Beyond his global IUSS contributions, Axel has left a significant regional impact in Mexico and Latin America as vice-commissioner of the Youth for the Mexican Soil Science Society. Moreover, his groundbreaking soil education initiative “Proyecto Suelox” received international recognition when honored with the prestigious FAO’s King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award 2022 in Thailand.Axel has been diligently pursuing a joint doctoral degree since 2023, founded by the Research Foundation – Flanders, at the VUB and KU Leuven. His doctoral research is centered on the soil micromorphology of historical terraces in the Eastern Mediterranean, which promises to shed light on critical and aesthetic aspects of the long-term human-environment relationships surrounding terraced landscapes.

Jeno Panganiban
