ABOUT THE DIVISION
The Soil Survey Division (SSD) is the oldest division in the Bureau of Soils and Water Management. The rationalized SSD is committed to provide primary soil resources information for agricultural development planning, policy formulation and research. It has expanded its mandate to accommodate current and emerging agro-environmental concerns as they impact and relate to the sustainability of the country’s soil resources for agricultural production and provision of its ecosystem services.
The SSD has maintained its four sections: (1) Pedomorphology, Genesis and Soil Classification Section (PGSCS), (2) Pedospehere Dynamics Analysis Section (PDAS), (3) Soil Productivity Evaluation Section (SPES), and (4) Soil Degradation Assessment Section (SDAS).

Pedomorphology, Genesis and Soil Classification Section
This section is the merging of two former sections and focuses on identification, classification, mapping and correlation of soils, including the validation of known soil series pertinent to its physical and chemical characteristics and use for agricultural and other purposes.
Pedosphere Dynamics Analysis Section
This section deals with the relationship and dynamics of soil physical and chemical characteristics, processes of soil aggradation and degradation to agricultural production, food security, soil carrying capacity and human safety.
Soil Productivity Evaluation Section
This was renamed from the existing section, Soil Productivity Rating and deals primarily with the interpretation of soil survey data for suitability classification for specific crop/land use, grouping of soil mapping units according to their agricultural and ecological productivity, and assessing the fertility status of soils for the development of appropriate fertilization strategy.
Soil Degradation Assessment Section
This section is responsible for the characterization, assessment and mapping of various forms of soil degradation including the marginal and problem soils and their implication to long-term agricultural productivity.
