The ACT Scaling Test (AST) is a test designed by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) to facilitate the comparison of T and H Course scores both within and across colleges. The test measures skills necessary for success at university. It is divided into:
Multiple Choice Questions
Short Response Questions
Writing Task
All students should sit a trial AST to familiarise themselves with the format of the test. In addition, teachers are encouraged to embed AST style questions into their courses. Look below at the exemplar AST papers (which can also be found on our website).
Notice that questions are quantitative as well as qualitative. Focus is on critical thinking, logical reasoning and evaluation.

Notice that the topic is generic and that students have to create their own thesis. They are rewarded for engaging their audience, structuring a persuasive piece of writing and effectively communicating their ideas to their audience.
The AST is used purely to scale Tertiary students' marks. It is built on the principles of effective quality assessment.
Developing quality assessment items is important for all students and all assessment tasks that you design. You can access the Quality Assessment Guidelines here: Quality Assessment Guidelines which will help you to write an effective suite of assessment tasks.
AST is an important event in the Year 12 calendar. Think about your subject. Write a question in the style of a short answer question which relates to your subject area.
