Dr. Manish Jaiswal

Manish received his PhD degree from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Kanpur. He then moved to Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA, for postdoctoral research. Currently, he is leading an independent research program at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Hyderabad. Manish is primarily interested in asking fundamental questions about cell and developmental biology using fruit flies. In the lab of Prof. Sinha at IITK, Manish has worked on deciphering the genetic mechanism of orchestrations of growth and pattern formation during an organ development. During postdoctoral research, Manish conducted a large-scale mutagenesis screen and has identified many novel genes required for development, function and maintenance of neurons. Importantly, he has used fly mutant phenotypes to identify new mutations and pathogenic mechanisms causing human neurodegenerative diseases. Manish's group at TIFR Hyderabad is interested in identifying the genetic regulation of mitochondrial size and numbers during development and under physiological stress. More recently, Manish's lab is using flies to uncover the biology of polyphosphates, an inorganic compound present across evolution and often considered as a molecular fossil in metazoans.
